Prepare

Gather your documents – financials, mission statement, strategic plan. Be ready for the next grant opportunity when it comes.

Assess

Gather letters of support from community, multiple estimates from online sources and contractors, budget numbers, volunteer hours and labor costs 

Write/Edit

Use clearly defined goals to align your mission with the grant-giving organization. Make connections between your programming, social impact and volunteers.

Manage / Report

Congratulations! You your grant application was approved. Now the hard work starts. Keep it on budget and make sure you follow all the reporting requirements.

Competition is Tough

The Numbers Game

A non-profit society in British Columbia faces stiff competition from many other like-minded organizations. With over 27,000 charities and non-profits in BC, it works out to almost 1 charity per 400 people in BC. Charities have money to work with averaging $680,000 in revenue, while more than half of non-profits in BC bring in less than $25,000 annually. As a non profit it’s tough to compete against bigger organizations with many paid staff.

It can often prove beneficial to hire a grant writer with a proven track record of success.
